North of the News Box: Canada’s 2025 Year in Review in Google Search
12. December 2025Canada’s 2025 news year in Google Search was shaped by a mix of domestic politics, regional developments, and major international stories, and this became clearly visible across Google’s news categories. This article looks back at how news about Canada surfaced in Google Search based on visibility data from the Trisolute News Dashboard.
The analysis covered the period from January 1, 2025, to November 30, 2025, and combined visibility on mobile and desktop devices. All ranking types were included, namely News Box headline, News Box text, News Box carousel, Video Box, Publisher carousel, Other carousel, Web Story, Featured Snippet, Visual Digest, and organic rankings.
For this year in review, the focus was on the following Google news categories in Canada: Top Stories, Headlines, Canada, World, Business, Technology, Entertainment, Sports, Science, and Health. Each category section highlights the top 3 publishers by visibility score and shows how many rankings they achieved and across how many keywords. It also outlines the 25 most ranked keywords in that category and takes a closer look at AI Overviews based on the total number of SERPs per keyword, how often AI Overviews appeared, and which share of SERPs that represented.
Rankings in this analysis reflect how strongly topics and publishers were surfaced by Google. They do not directly measure audience interest, although search behavior certainly plays a role, and they are also influenced by factors such as Google’s interpretation of relevance and freshness. Understanding these patterns can help publishers evaluate their performance across categories, identify opportunities in specific topics or SERP features, and refine their editorial and SEO strategies for the coming year.

Overall findings and outlook for 2026
Across Canada’s 2025 news categories, visibility at the very top tended to concentrate around a small set of recurring publishers, with CBC appearing in first place in most domestic-focused sections such as Top Stories, Headlines, Canada, Business, and Health. CTV News also featured prominently across several of these categories, often closely competing with CBC on visibility score and ranking volume. In contrast, categories with a stronger international or specialist focus showed a different top layer, with BBC leading World, and niche publishers such as IGN in Technology and Space.com in Science taking the top position in their respective sections.
On the keyword level, several consistent themes connected multiple categories. U.S. politics and its spillover into Canadian coverage featured strongly across Top Stories, Headlines, World, and Business, driven by high ranking volumes around “trump” and related combinations. International conflict and geopolitics formed another cross-category cluster through keywords such as “gaza,” “israel,” and “ukraine,” while Canadian domestic visibility was reinforced through national and regional references, including “canada,” “alberta,” “ontario,” “b.c,” and “toronto.” In Sports, the keyword landscape was strongly anchored in Canadian franchises, especially hockey and baseball team terms, while Technology leaned heavily toward consumer brands and gaming releases. Health stood out for its strong concentration around infectious disease coverage, particularly “measles” and its variations, which clearly shaped visibility in that category.
AI Overviews showed a clear gradient across categories. They played only a small role in Top Stories and Sports, while they had a more established presence in Headlines, Canada, World, Business, and Technology. Science already showed a higher level of AIO integration, and Health stood out most strongly, with AI Overviews appearing in roughly one third of SERPs and reaching very high shares for broad medical concepts and explanatory queries. Across categories, the AIO patterns consistently pointed in the same direction: AI Overviews were most likely to appear for short, generic, and evergreen queries, while they were less prominent in terms that were closer to breaking news or highly specific developments.
For 2026 planning, these patterns suggest several clear takeaways. They indicate where visibility is concentrated at the top of each category, where News Boxes continue to account for a meaningful share of rankings, and where AI Overviews already act as a major entry point in the SERP. For publishers, this can help prioritize category strategies, identify where explanatory formats may complement news coverage, and refine topic selection based on where Google surfaces content most strongly—especially in areas like Health and Science, where AI Overviews appear to be structurally integrated rather than occasional.
