June 2015 : Visibility in Google News Boxes UK
19. July 2015Regarding the data of the Google News Boxes for the UK in June, it strikes that bbc.co.uk and theguardian.com were by far the two top players. Articles published by both sites ranked in the News Boxes very often. In total, more than half of all articles shown in the Google News Boxes belonged to the BBC and the Guardian. Sometimes they even reached nearly 75 percent together, for instance on the 5th of June. There you can see that bbc.co.uk has 39 percent, and theguardian.com 35 percent visibility in the Google News Boxes (see data below).
Apart from these two are, of course, some other successful players – like dailymail.co.uk, telegraph.co.uk and independent.co.uk. But those players have competitors who try to replace them as well. In April and June it was mirror.co.uk which successfully achieved a placement within the Top 5 Players (You can see that in the analysis of April and May). Independent.co.uk lost its place instead.
It is not just the News Boxes which generate a higher number of clicks – there are also many internet users who take their information of Google News. Let´s take a look at the relevant data:
Contrary to the results regarding the News Boxes, theguardian.com only ranked third respectively fourth in Google News. Here, telegraph.co.uk had a better performance and battled for the top place with bbc.co.uk. Moreover, dailymail.co.uk and mirror.co.uk were part of the top 5 players in Google News. As well as in the Google News Boxes, there are some more players who fight for a better placement within Google News. In May, for instance, articles of reuters.com were often placed there – the mirror had no place within the top 5 players in that month as you see in the following graph.
