Google News Boxes and the Primaries in Kentucky and Oregon – which publisher ranked best ?
22. May 2016Hillary Clinton won the Kentucky primary, Sanders won Oregon. In Kentucky the primary turned out to be extremely close: Clinton just won by half a percentage point over Sanders. Nevertheless it seems that Hillary Clinton will become the presidential candidate of the Democrats. Donald Trump won Oregon for the Republicans. We now take a look at the winners in Google News. Which news publisher had the highest visibility in the Google News Boxes on 17th of May 2016?
Regarding the whole keyword set we looked at (for example the names of the candidates and keywords like “Kentucky primary”, “Oregon primary” and “Oregon primary results”), we can see that nytimes.com and cnn.com were in front. Nytimes.com had a visibility in the Google News Boxes of 26.6 percent. Cnn.com had a visibility of 20.6 percent. Thes are very good results indeed. Nbcnews.com is on third position with a visibility in the Google News Boxes of 9.9 percent, followed by Oregonlive.com. On fifth position is wnd.com.
Google News Box “Hillary Clinton” and “Hillary Rodham Clinton”
But which news publisher won the Google News Boxes with names of the politicians as keyword ? Let´s take a look at „Hillary Clinton“ and „Hillary Rodham Clinton“. As we can see in the diagrams below there are some striking differences between the two Google News Boxes. In the News Box of the keyword “Hillary Clinton” nytimes.com can be called the winner: most of the time nytimes.com was on first position in the News Box. If the site was not on first, then it was on second or third position, so that nytimes.com was almost the whole day in the “Hillary Clinton” Google News Box. Other news publishers which were very often in the news box are latimes.com and nbcnews.com.
In the Google News Box “Hillary Rodham Clinton” there are some different news publishers which were successful. Still, nytimes.com was one of the winners of the News Box as you can see in the diagram below, but the rest of the news publishers in this News Box differ from those in the “Hillary Clinton” one. For example, during night wnd.com was on first position in the “Hillary Rodham Clinton” News Box. In the evening until midnight it was breitbart.com. Both were not part of the “Hillary Clinton” News Box. It shows that it can be worth to concentrate on a different spelling. Wnd.com and breitbart.com were able to ban big news publishers like latimes.com or nbcnews.com from the Google News Box “Hillary Rodham Clinton”, just because they consequently used her complete name.
Google News Boxes “Bernie Sanders” and “Donald Trump”
Let´s now take a look at the Google News Boxes of the Democrat “Bernie Sanders” and of the Republican “Donald Trump” to find out which news publisher was most successful regarding their visibility in Google. The diagram of “Bernie Sanders” shows that cnn.com was the winner of this Google News One Box. Between midnight and 2 p.m. this news publisher was almost always on first position in the News Box, the same between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. At the rest of the day cnn.com was on second or third position, so that it was always in the Google News Box. Meanwhile, on second position there were nytimes.com (between midnight and 2 p.m.) and oregonlive.com (between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.). The last one was also able to reach first position for a few times (for example between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.)
In the “Donald Trump” Google News One Box cnn.com also was the winner. Most of the day this news publisher was on first position. Nytimes.com was also very successful, as well as nbcnews.com and twitter.com.
