Australia in Google News: A Data-Driven Review of 2025

2025 brought significant political developments, major sporting moments, and ongoing social debates to Australia, and these shifts were clearly mirrored in Google’s news landscape. This year in review looks at how news about Australia appeared in Google Search, based on visibility data from the Trisolute News Dashboard.

The analysis covers the period from January 1, 2025, to November 30, 2025, and combines visibility signals across mobile and desktop devices. All ranking types were included in the evaluation: News Box headline, News Box text, News Box carousel, Video Box, Publisher carousel, Other carousel, Web Story, Featured Snippet, Visual Digest, and organic rankings.

For this overview, the focus is on the following Google news categories in Australia: Top Stories, Headlines, Australia (national news), World, Business, Technology, Entertainment, Sports, Science, and Health. Each category section presents the top 20 publishers by visibility score, along with their total rankings and keyword breadth. The sections also highlight the 25 most ranked keywords and examine the role of AI Overviews, including the total number of SERPs analyzed per keyword, how often AI Overviews appeared, and what share of SERPs they represented.

As with all News Dashboard analyses, rankings in this article reflect how prominently topics and publishers were surfaced by Google. They do not directly measure audience interest, although search behavior can influence visibility, and they are shaped by additional factors such as Google’s relevance assessments and the dynamics of real-time news. Understanding these patterns helps publishers evaluate their performance across categories, identify topic areas with strong or emerging visibility, and refine editorial or SEO strategies for the year ahead.

Note: since this article takes a detailed look at each major news category, you can use the Table of Contents below to jump directly to the sections most relevant to you.

International tournaments and high-profile events contributed additional visibility through keywords such as “world cup qualifiers,” “ashes,” “matildas,” and “australian open.” Motorsport and athlete-focused terms like “f1” and “piastri” added further variety, while queries such as “live” and the more unusual “gout gout” rounded out the list.

Across all ranking types, Sports produced 14,870,148 results, with 4,743,230 appearing in News Boxes, giving the category a News Box share of 31.90%.

Within the Sports category, AIO results were most visible in broad, generic, or role-based terms rather than in highly specific competition queries. Keywords such as “call,” “appeal,” and “club” recorded some of the highest AIO shares, often exceeding 80%. Strong integration also appeared for “diamonds,” “season,” and “cats,” while terms like “blues,” “star,” and “record” showed moderate but still substantial AIO presence. By comparison, event- or performance-oriented keywords such as “trade,” “draft,” “2025,” and “england” displayed notably lower AIO penetration, indicating that AIOs surfaced more frequently in conceptual or descriptive queries than in results-driven or time-sensitive sports topics.

Across 15,015 SERPs in Sports, AIOs appeared in 5,052 results, giving the category an overall AIO share of 33.64%. This reflects a selective but meaningful level of AIO integration, concentrated mainly in broad terminology rather than in competition-specific keywords.

Overall findings and outlook for 2026

Across the Australian news landscape, a relatively concentrated group of publishers shaped much of the visibility in 2025. ABC appeared consistently among the strongest performers across all categories, joined by The Guardian, 9News, News.com.au, and The Sydney Morning Herald, who held a place in nearly every category. Wikipedia held a notable presence in several sections, particularly those with broad informational queries, while internationally oriented categories brought additional visibility to global publishers such as BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, and Reuters. In more specialised verticals, dedicated outlets such as AFL and NRL.com in Sports, NASA and Space.com in Science, and domain-specific brands in Business and Technology added further depth to the landscape.

On the keyword level, domestic political themes—including “albanese,” “labor,” and “dutton”—were among the most visible terms in multiple categories, while region-specific queries such as “sydney,” “queensland,” “nsw,” and “melbourne” appeared consistently throughout the dataset. International categories were defined by geopolitical events involving “ukraine,” “gaza,” “israel,” “iran,” and related combinations that mirrored global developments. Business rankings were shaped by financial and economic topics such as “asx,” “rba,” and “inflation,” while Technology was driven heavily by gaming, device, and AI-related terms. Entertainment remained centered on celebrities, pop culture, and recurring puzzle queries, whereas Science and Health combined research-focused topics with high-visibility terms related to disease, medical conditions, and natural phenomena.

AI Overviews showed wide variation across categories. Sections such as Top Stories and Sports displayed comparatively modest AIO integration, while Headlines, Australia, and Business presented more substantial levels. Technology, Science, and Health showed the highest AIO penetration, particularly in broad, definitional, or research-driven queries where AIO responses appeared frequently. Across categories, one clear pattern emerged: AIOs surfaced most often for stable, evergreen topics with a strong informational or explanatory component, and far less for breaking news or rapidly changing events.

Taken together, these findings offer several points of orientation for newsroom and SEO strategy in 2026. They highlight where publisher competition was strongest, which topics consistently drove visibility, and how Google’s evolving SERP features—including News Boxes and AI Overviews—shaped exposure across categories. This can help newsrooms identify opportunities to strengthen coverage in high-visibility areas, invest in formats that align with SERP behavior, and expand explanatory or evergreen content in categories where AIO already plays a meaningful role.
